Welcome to the 2008 Season Updates. As many of you may be aware, Spring 2008 has been colder than usual in much of the northern USA and Canada. This has been especially true at Hawk Lake Lodge. This is evident by the heavy snowfall and the late ice out this Spring. What this means is that the whole progress of a normal season is as much as two weeks behind schedule. Conditions generally present by late May in a normal year, will present themselves two weeks later.
The Northern Pike of trophy caliber have been rare to date as they are still recovering from the spawn that has only very recently concluded. Although Ron from St.Louis caught a 45"specimen, most have been smaller. The walleye should have concluded the spawning ritual by the time of the season opener. In reality they have only started by the time they would normally be concluding. The result is a very good Spring for the walleye fishing. Many fish have already been caught in the 31" to 33" range, with most anglers having caught at least one 30"+ fish. All in all, not too bad given that only until very recently the ice of winter release its grip.
